As a fellow tanjorian (mayavaram and palamaneri, to be specific... :-) I could relate to this soo well...

Some that were used in our household.

1) Avuttha edatthula aranaakayaru, Kazhattina edatthula komannam-nu poraan paaru (meaning the fella doesnt put things back in place where they belong...)

2) Pona maata thedavum maataa, Vandha maata kattavum maataa (meaning the person has a very laidback, lazy, bindaas or as they say it now, "cool" attitude...)

3) Pagallaye pasumaadu theriyaadu, Raathreela erumamaata thedaraalaam... (self-explanatory.. :-)

4) Pichai eduttharaam perumulu, adha pudungi thinnaraam hanumaaru... (phew!! evlo nakkal!)

Ivlo thaan ippo nyaabagam varadhu...

My paatis used to use all these vajanams sarva-saadharanamaa, it used to embarrass the hell out of us as children... (have shared only the non-obscene ones above..) How I wish I could hear all this again now... Our children would have no clue of what we are saying, if we were to use this in our conversations with them... Hmmmmmn.. Deja vu...!! Thanks for the nostalgic trip...

Wish I could have typed this in tamizh... It somehow doesnt sound better typed in english...Gayathrinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3672689495290709037.post-50117841587532120122010-07-26T13:49:08.201-07:002010-07-26T13:49:08.201-07:00Usha..

I never expected you to have such a repertoire. Your depth is so much that you can start a TV program on your own.

You write great in both English and Tamil . Are words like Raangi, Soplaangi, Eeshikaradhu, Pommanaati, Kiradhagan, Thaaja pandradhu, Kollaipakkam, sandaalan, avloondu and ivloondu specific to Tanjore jilla? I thought these words were common to TamBrahm household. We are not from Tanjore and we use these words frequently.
Btw, one of my friends(from Trichy) has a habit of saying, "Avan komaname kaathula parakaradham.. Rameswarathuku ponanaam vasthra dhaanam seiyarathukku". Again am not sure whether this is specific to Trichy jilla.
