  1. Maybe for today's groom-to-be types, the bride's family can give:

    1) Gold long chain with clip for ID card
    2) Gold case for cell phone/pager
    3) Gold laptop case

The budget required for traditional weddings is becoming insanely huge ! At least for the "Veettai Katti Paar" part of this phrase, there is ample time and EMI schemes available

Maybe someone should start a similar scheme for funding marriages with the tagline - "Marriages are made in heaven, and financed by XYZ company" - with the key members of the marriage party wearing visible XYZ company logos

  4. Adada - You had a golden opportunity and you missed it - I am referring to your son's wedding, that also could have been as simple as Indira Gandhi's or Sonia Gandhi's may be.... Bottomline is, all of this is relative - someone will call what we do as extravagance and we call someone else as extravagant .. only when it is just the bride and the groom and their parents/guardians alone present in the solemnizing ceremony and the process gets over with that, it cant be called a simple wedding in IMHO

  5. "You are so right. Money is literally wasted. The best would be to go for a simple wedding and throw a huge dinner or lunch at one go, instead of celebrating for so many days.
Also there is this velaiyadal thattu- the one where the girl's side arranges some "n" number of thattu for nishchayathaartham and the boy's side tries to outdo that "n" number of thattu during marriage and it is such a waste of time and money and nothing but "show-off", in the name of sampradhayam.
And these days in chennai, in the marriage hall they have a "seer room", where everything is displayed, including Gold and silver stuffs..it happened during my wedding too...7 years back!!! IMHO not necessary at all...
Though for the silver and Gold stuffs, my mom has another explanation. She says it is all "asset", so that in case we are in dire need of money at some point of time in life, we can use that....it does make sense though( from their POV)... but yeah.."displaying" bit doesn't make sense...
And we tend to spend so much money on the photographs and DVD, and in my case, we don't even open that HUGE , HEAVY marriage album ever. Hope to do it atleast when I become old, if I have the strength to lift it."

  6. PV: Some bank I think it was Karur vaisya bank had a recurring deposit scheme which they called Thirumagal thirumanth thittam.

Anon:I have a problem with anon commenters who think they can say anything even without knowing me.
Since you commeneted ona Tamil popst I assume you are familiar with the way Tamil brahmin marriages are conducted. It is the girl's side that decides on how the wedding is conducted. The boy's side can only make demands if they want. They cannot force the girls' side to reduce anything. May be you are from Thanjavur- the sharpness and sarcasm makes me believe so.
The same thing happened with my son's wedding. So we could only try NOT TO make any demands. The main complaint from their side was that " ellame vendamnu sollidarel'. In fact we requested for a temple wedding and a reception which was summarily dismissed by the girls' side citing "engalukku ore ponnu. Enga paiyanukku pannina madiri ponnukkum pannanum. melum idhu kadiasi kalyanam. So engalaley mudinjavaraikkum panna aasaip padarom." matter closed. We could not say anything more.
Actually the girl's side had a golden opportunity to take the lead and reduce expenses because we simply wanted the girl and nothing more. But they refused to take it.

Aargee; Now I understand all the thattus that came at my son's nichayathartham. This is a tradition is it?
Display of seeru is one of the most vulgar displays of status I have seen. That is why I say there should be a law limiting expense on weddings.

  7. ooh oooh - what a strong reaction... i dont know what happened in your son's wedding, you mentioned the happenings briefly in your other posts on wearing wrong footwear etc I thought it was an elaborate wedding. I understand it is the girl's side who decide on how they want to spend with (ofcourse) the buy in from groom's side at the least. Your sentence in this post "mattram thevai aanaal naan seiya matten yaaravadu mun vandhu seithal adarikka thayar" kind of egged me to write this. No offence please. It helps to introspect sometimes .... On another note, I know of a boy who said he wouldnt marry the girl if they spent such huge sums and he got everyone to agree on a simple marriage - but they are few and far between I suppose :)

  8. Anonymous is anonymous isnt it - if someone knows you they wont remain anonymous. When you are ok with anonymous writers approving or commending your thoughts, why is it the question of not knowing you comes up? May be you should block anonymous comments altogether if it is not palable to receive thoughts which brings out some fallacies in the argument in your post. As Gandhi said, be the change you want to see change

  9. @anon: there is a tendency for people to believe that they know everything about a blogger because they have read what she/ he writes.
In our own way we tried to keep our side of the wedding simple without imposing our views on the girl's/ girl's parents' wishes. For example we had only family at the nischayathartham and the whole event was done at our house. For the wedding it was mostly e-invites from our side. we also limited our guests at the wedding to about 30. And no gifts with thamboola pai. We bought the saris for the girl for most of the occasions. And our reception had a set menu in the space provided by my husband's employer institution.
people did make snide comments about kanjaththanam despite having just one son. I could not care less. I generally try to be the change I like to see and do not write about something I do not believe in or practice.
If you have been following my blog at agelessbonding i would have assumed that you would know that much about me.
we were guests at the wedding at the girl's side and we behaved graciously as guests should.

    There was another comment on this post. I dont know if it is the same anon. It said;

    My response to this is:
My problem with anon commenters is that most of the time they are people who know me. but they tend to go anon when they want to make sharp criticisms.
The point I said about not knowing me is that unless you know me personally none of my readers can claim to know about my personal life from my blog. I speak about my son's work at times but usually refrain from talking about my family in detail. I express opinions and feelings on issues most of the time and I try to be as honest as I can be. These posts are not meant to solicit appreciation or admiration.

There is no question of blocking comments unless they are obscene or offensive. Blogs are meant to provoke healthy interaction and opposing view points are most welcome as long as they are not intended to hurt.

  11. The comments are strictly based on the sentences written in the blog - the point is like this and please look at it as only a intellectual logical perspective - you succumbed to the pressures of being a gracious guest, your relative is succumbing to the pressures of the society and all of us at some time or the other succumb to some pressure or the other isnt it - so why make statements like iruppavargal ellam serndhu oru munnnodi uruvakki vidugirargal illadavardhan kashtapada vendi irukkiradhu" .. its about resisting things when we know it is wrong. Since I get a feeling that you do not like ostentatiousness in any form (once again this is also based on your blog contents only) I was wondering why you could not resist it in your case.

Its more a curiosity to know how each one thinks and nothing more nothing less .. so chill

  12. Raj:Hahahha. illena shivaji padathule solomon papayya madiri edhanum plan pannalame.
These days most boys do not want an ostentatious wedding. So you can decide and have a kovil kalyanam and one wedding meal.

Anon:In my son's case we did not arrange the marriage. They had already decided to get married and the girl was under pressure from her parents to comply with their wishes on how the wedding was to be done. And we did not want to complicate matters. So we had our way at our reception.
I do understand the social compulsions they felt and that is why I was talking of having a law to limit expenses so it will cease to be such a status issue.
